I am currently doing a week-long Advanced Placement Summer Institute to learn more about my class, AP Psychology. The presenter had some fabulous suggestions about how to create neurons in order to better understand neural transmission. The pipe cleaners, beads, pom poms, jewels, and googly eyes will be a delight for my students to experience neural activity including neurotransmitters and agonists and antagonists. One of the participants said that her students keep their neurons all year as pets!
Most of the items will be used repeatedly to help students develop science skills and analyze data.
The Charty game will help students interpret graphs and work together. The chips will be used to teach...and reteach because students struggle with this...random sample, representative sample, and random assignment.
The color game will be an excellent way for students to have fun with priming, another concept which they struggle with. In addition, I always work on building relationships, but with the amount of anxiety students are currently experiencing, socializing and supporting each other is going to be a main focus of my class. These games will be very helpful with psychology concepts as well as social skills.
