My Students

We are a Title I, brand new French dual language elementary school, the first of its kind in Texas! Our students speak English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, and several African national languages.

As a brand new school, we still are lacking in several essential items.

Most of our English-Language Learners must be exited from the program by 3rd grade, so there are significant delays in their literacy development. We will always have a challenge providing for all of the students' needs as we are slowly acquiring resources that take years to establish.

This school year, with many students coming from Hurricane Harvey-damaged homes or transferring from damaged schools, we have higher needs than usual. We have exceeded our typical classroom size to accommodate all the students who can't attend their local schools. Next year, we anticipate many of these same students to return, as our school has grown on them and their families!

My Project

It's a good problem for a Reading Teacher to have-popular books that never make it back to the classroom bookshelf. Once word gets around that certain (particularly the graphic) novels are good reads, I can barely keep enough copies around to keep up with the demand!

So getting some Kindle Fires, protective cases, and replacing some beloved books that went missing from the classroom library will go a long way to always having ample, hearty books for the hungry young readers will make for higher success all around our school.

I have 5th graders who always visit my classroom (I teach 4th grade) to borrow from my personal collection as well. Many are former students, and we keep our relationships strong by discussing the plots of their latest reads.

Nothing pleases me more, and having most of the frequently and long-term borrowed books on Kindles ensures the availability of their favorites, which are only to be read while keeping the device in or near the classroom.

Kids enjoy the technological aspect of handling Kindles, with the accompanying Audiobooks and backlit screen. Additionally, having a web-browser is incredibly convenient. And the camera features mean the can create digital portfolios and record themselves reading to improve fluency.

I am also requesting class sets of the series that proves to engage reluctant readers for what may be the first time in their young lives.

The best way to pass Reading standardized tests is to avidly read, and your donations will keep that spark of literacy smoldering until it blazes full on for life.
