Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in one of the most under-resourced communities in Brooklyn. Many face significant challenges, with some living in shelters and traveling long distances to get to school each day. Most come from single-parent households, and many reside in nearby housing projects.

Despite these hardships, my students are incredible.

They are creative, talented, and artistic children who bring so much energy and enthusiasm to school. They love being here, surrounded by their friends and teachers, and they thrive in our close-knit community.

Our school is predominantly made up of African American students with a small percentage being Hispanic students. About 97% of them rely on the free lunch program, underscoring the financial challenges they face. Yet, their passion for art shines through every day.

They are curious, fun, and full of life. Art-making is more than an activity for them—it’s a powerful tool for learning, expression, and growth. They love exploring new materials, experimenting with techniques, and finding creative ways to share their stories.

This year, we're working on exciting projects like:

• "Silly Self-Portraits": Students will use pom-poms, wiggle eyes, and foam sheets to reimagine themselves in fun, creative ways, promoting self-expression and individuality.

• "Invent a Creature" Clay Workshop:

Using modeling clay, pipe cleaners, and other materials, students will invent unique creatures, building storytelling and design skills.

To make these projects a reality, we need your support! Here's a list of essential materials we are hoping to gather:

• Glue

• Drawing paper

• Modeling clay
