Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom consists of literacy time in the morning, which includes word study, story time and reading & writing workshop. After lunch we move on to Math & Social Studies and I often like to end the day giving the students opportunities for independent work.

The school is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the Chinatown area.

Our school serves a large population of emerging bilinguals. My students consist of an unique group of children with diverse needs as they emerge as Chinese-speaking bilinguals. They often speak a variety of dialects, both at school and at home, while learning an additional language, English, outside of the home. These young children often serve as the main connection to their Chinese speaking parents and grandparents at home. Due to this, the children and their families take their roles in school very seriously and do their very best to ensure they excel in all areas of academics in school. I know what it was like to be from a large, low income family and struggle to obtain quality school supplies for the year. I am requesting these supplies in the hopes to ease the financial burden on the families I will serve this year and also provide students with the best learning experience possible.

My Project

As my grandmother would always say, "cada persona es un mundo" (each person is a world). Every child learns differently and should be allowed the opportunity to demonstrate what they learn using different methods and materials. This is especially important when working with a unique group of children such as English language learners. In my classroom, as often as possible, I allow students to demonstrate their learning through writing, drawing, art work, crafts, projects, etc. What 7 year old child would not thoroughly enjoy a project of their choosing when given all the materials they need? This is why I have requested paint, art paper, felt, tape, writing paper, and other materials because through my experience, these are materials that I know the children will be excited to use and can do so independently. Children love having options and those options often motivate children to work hard, stay engaged, and do their best.

Donations to this project will improve the quality of learning in my classroom significantly.

When children are given choices, motivation and engagement in learning often increase, however, choices require materials and this project is seeking to provide my students with the materials they need to kick start their imaginations. Please help me get these children excited about learning this year!
