My Project

I teach high school students in the city of Philadelphia. My students and I will use the Cricut Maker to make arts and crafts projects, after school, where they will have the opportunity to learn how to design and create items like t-shirts, keychains, but more importantly, have a safe space to hang out, talk about their day and learn how to create products.

Last school year, when the prom coordinator needed help with prom favors, a few students and I created personalized key chains using my personal Cricut Maker.

Students who I never met before were interested in helping me create the keychains. A few weeks later when my school received the wrong graduation stoles, a few students, whom I just met because they were interested in the Cricut, helped me cut and personalize each stole with graduate's names and the school's mascot.

During the two weeks that I spent working on the prom favors and graduation stoles, I learned two things. 1. Students are interested in learning how to create art that they can use and 2. It's easy to build relationships with students and learn about their interests in a low stakes environment that then transfers into the classroom.
