My Students

Young. Resilient. Flexible. Inspiring. Those are the words that our students embody each and every day. A new elementary school in New York City, we're in the process of adding a grade of students every year. Currently only pre-kindergarten through third grade, our school houses primarily young learners.

Whether remotely, in school part-time, or in school full-time our students make the best of their schooling to socialize, create positive experiences, and grow.

Two out of the three years our school has been operating, we've been affected by Covid-19. These unforeseen circumstances coupled with conflicting priorities in our limited school budget has made it difficult to create a positive, upbeat learning community the way we envision a welcoming classroom.

My Project

This year, more than ever, it's important to create opportunities for building community, engaging socially, and learning without distractions. This can be difficult when students sit at separate desks at separate tables where some students are more than twenty feet away from the front of the room.

With this rug, our students will have a cozy meeting area where they can all sit and learn together.

This rug will signify a space in the classroom that we use specifically to build community. We will use the carpet to host our morning meetings and closing circles where we share, offer compliments, and greet each other daily. We will use the carpet for our mini-lessons before we begin our independent practice for each subject area. We will use the carpet to hold important community discussions where we collaborate, discuss, and actively listen to one another.
