My Students

I have two amazing groups of 1st grade students as the English teacher in a dual language program. These small humans teach me every day. I see their determination when learning to read, their compassion when comforting a peer, their best efforts when using their best first grading handwriting, their enthusiasm when sharing a story, and their generous spirit when they bring in their Halloween candy to share with me. I am beyond blessed to be their teacher.

We are a Community School, providing multiple services to families on our campus, including a mobile food bank, clothing resources, counseling services, just to name a few.

Many of our students are new to our country, from low socioeconomic homes, and new English learners.

My Project

Having a cozy reading corner with giant pillows to sit on will make the task of independent read special and comfortable. This is the first step in implementing flexible seating in my classroom.

Flexible seating empowers students by giving them choice within their learning.

The comfort the pillows provide will enhance their learning by giving them a cozy place to practice their developing reading skills. These items are easily movable around the classroom, allowing students the freedom relocate around the classroom. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.

It makes reading time special.
