Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a elementary school in the Bronx. The students in my classroom are diagnosed with a range of developmental disabilities and are all non verbal. Despite these challenges, my students are always eager to learn and engage in the various aspects of the school environment. It is known all over the district that teachers and therapists at my place of employment go above and beyond to provide a warm but challenging learning environment. I would like to continue that tradition by adding simple and appropriate modifications to the current learning environment.

My Project

The cozy corner in the classroom is an area where students can go to calm down when they are having a behavioral challenge. Students with communication delays tend to show frustration frequently due to their lack of ability to express themselves freely.

Cozy areas are not just used during behavioral challenges but also as an independent reading station or secondary sensory area.

I am currently building my cozy area and with Lakeshore's 10 year guarantee, I'll be able to start off with a great quality and long lasting rug. Children on the autism spectrum respond to textures in various ways. This rug is thick enough to be used without alternative seating and soft enough to not be an irritant to students' skin.
