Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves 6th through 8th-grade students. Our school is a Title I school, where all students receive free lunch. Our students have diverse backgrounds from places in the Bay like Oakland and outside the Bay like Yemen and Mexico. Spanish is the home language of many of our students at UFSA. Our students are passionate learners and thrive inside and outside of the classroom. While thriving academically, many of our students also play for our school's soccer, football, and volleyball team.

There has been an increase in the number of students that have expressed interest in joining the Black Student Union at our site to learn more about and celebrate the achievements, accomplishments, and inventions of African Americans in the world.

The Black Student Union at site was created in August 2019 as a space where ALL STUDENTS (Black students and Non Black, girls and boys, mixed age and grade level,) can learn and grow!

My Project

These materials will allow my students to feel like this is their space...with materials that they have requested that is being created just for them where they can drink water without having to leave class, have a place to store their classroom materials, and have materials that represent leaders from their culture that they want to learn more about. My students have spent 18 months during the global pandemic doing school from home. We are still transitioning back to the classroom, I want to welcome them with an inviting, comfortable environment.

The level of student excitement when I asked them to tell me about things that they needed or wanted for their class was over the top and I love that they were ready to share their ideas.
