My Students

My students need to be able to feel at ease when coming to the counseling office; a place that gives off calming energy, where they can feel comfortable and express themselves freely. Creating this type of environment will allow me to help them overcome daily and life challenges.

My students are middle school children grades 6-8.

They are loving and caring children despite the many challenges they face. In my counseling office students come to me for a variety of different issues. Many of my students come from broken homes, poverty-stricken families, abusive environments, and the list goes on. They are wonderful children who are growing up with heavy burdens to bear. These challenges, unfortunately, restrict them from excelling and reaching their full potential. As a counselor, it breaks my heart that these students have so many obstacles to overcome at such a young age. The school does the best they can to provide support for our students, but like most schools, we have several challenges due to budget cuts. I would love to create an environment for them where they can feel comfortable. A place to come and forget about their stresses, even if it is for only a short period of time.

My Project

Creating an environment that makes a child feel comfortable and a place they feel relaxed is ultimately what I want to create for my students. Some students don't have the luxury of going home to a comfortable bed at night or living in a stress free environment. These resources, including bean bag chairs, a cozy rug, and pillows, can help create a relaxing environment for them, a place where they can come to unwind, speak freely, and de-stress. A place that creates a positive atmosphere with inspirational quotes to lift them up when having a bad day, activities to take their frustrations out on in a positive way, and a comfy place to sit that helps melt away their stress. These materials can brighten their day instead of basic chairs and student desks which they see in the classroom. I believe creating a therapeutic environment is beneficial to helping them succeed emotionally and academically.

This project can make a difference in my student's lives because it will encourage them to freely express how they are feeling on a daily basis.

Who wouldn't want a place where they feel comfortable talking to someone? Especially students who normally have a hard time opening up to adults. Creating this environment is critical in helping them express their true feelings. It will change their lives for the better by having a positive place they can go to, a place they can call their own.
