My Students

My classroom is home to 26 incredible first graders. Our arts-focused K-8 public school is located in a predominantly low-income and urban community with a large bilingual population, which presents both challenges and opportunities.

My students are incredibly curious, active, quirky, and compassionate, and have diverse interests, backgrounds, and needs.

We spend our days together singing, asking questions, reading, writing, discussing, working with numbers, learning about our world, and striving to make our classroom community more inclusive, supportive, and kind.

My Project

A huge part of a first grader's work is learning to manage emotions, navigate conflicts, and make intentional choices. When students get upset, frustrated, or overstimulated, they need a place to go and emotional supports that they can access independently.My students need a tent, beanbag, pillows, books like, The Way I Feel, Millie Fierce along with other books. My students also need fidgets, rain sticks, and stuffed animals for a cozy corner in our classroom.

We need a cozy corner so that students have a quiet and peaceful retreat when they need a break from the action of the classroom.

Our cozy corner will have a canvas tent so that students can have private space to themselves when they need to cool off. Inside, students can get comfortable with pillows, a beanbag chair, and stuffed animals. The space will also offer drawing and writing supplies, hardcover picture books about managing emotions and conflicts, and sensory toys to help students calm down and refocus. Sand timers will also be available so that students can self-monitor their own time in the cozy corner.
