Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As I am nearing the end of my first year as a teacher, I have begun to reflect on how I can begin to prepare for my next class. Going into the year, I made sure to outfit my room with everything I thought I would need to create a safe and organized environment for my students. In doing so, I bought a bright 5' x 8' rug for my classroom library corner. On the first day of school as I gathered my class of 17 students on the rug for a read aloud, I quickly realized it would be a tight squeeze. Since then, I have gotten more students in my class, making it impossible for all of them to sit comfortably on the rug.

Another thing I did not realize before my first year of teaching is how much fourth graders love gathering on the carpet for read alouds!

Many of my students are struggling readers which can lead to a lack of interest in reading. When I read to them, I can see their genuine interest in a good story. This is something that I want to preserve. I want my students to be able to find joy in reading, so that as they progress in their literacy skills, they will become lifelong learners and readers.

I also value having students gather for community building SEL activities. Because we cannot all fit on the rug, I have resorted to moving chairs around the perimeter of the room. This is time consuming, loud, and messy. Having a big rug with enough space for everyone will ensure that there is a safe, distraction-free setting where we can have important conversations throughout the year.

Thank you for reading about our class project.

Sincerely,

Ms. Robertson
