In my years in elementary, I have found that creating a space where we can join together for whole group instruction and discussions before turning students out for independent work, has been best suited in a definitive space-which I have found with carpets.
This beautiful leaf carpet will become the central place where we gather together to learn as a group.
It will be a centralized form of the "heart" of our classroom, where we come together to solve problems, learn, share ideas, discuss, critique and more. It will be a soft space for students to sketch or read arts related books when they finish work early, or a nice space to take a little break.
The black runner rug will be lined along the floor where my students clean by the sinks, and also where they line up for class at the end. This will provide a set space where they are to line up, and will reduce the concern of slipping on water spills. It is an indoor/outdoor easy to clean option, that I am wanting to try to see if this further ensures safety for my students.
A goal I have is to be able to provide a more inclusive space. My prior rug is also beautiful and I am grateful to have had it funded through Donors Choose; but it unfortunately is not large enough for several of my classes, when I get 30 students in some groups, if not a little more. It is difficult to help them all feel welcome-when the other rug only seats 24. I will not be getting rid of that carpet, and it will still remain with my classroom, or will go to a teacher in need at my school. It will not be wasted, and will have a home.
