My Project

My culinary students love to try new things. Most of them have been raised drinking old fashioned cow's milk. We are getting ready to do a dairy unit where they will learn about milk, eggs, yogurt, butter, cream and cheese. When we begin the milk component of that unit, I want to show them an alternative to animal milk. Most of them are familiar with almond milk. We have used it to make smoothies; however, few students are familiar with oat milk.

Besides being environmentally sound, oat milk is a better choice for those who suffer from lactose intolerance.

Oat milk is high in fiber and vitamins. Like regular cow milk, oat milk has bone strengthening minerals, but the saturated fats in cow's milk are replaced with unsaturated fats. Oat milk is free of cholesterol. Learning to make homemade oat milk will give students another interesting experience and non-dairy option.
