Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a public school located in the heart of a community which is also a low-income area in a large city in Florida. Because of this, students lack access to various resources. 30% of the students we service live in shelters. We are a Title I school which means ninety-eight percent students qualify for free-reduced lunch which shows there need for access to resources. We are in a large urban area with 533 students.

Our school services students from eight different homeless shelters and drug-rehab facilities.

Thirty-nine percent of our students are English Language Learners. Like most children, our students are curious, eager to learn new things, and open to new experiences. Unfortunately, their economic situations do not always allow them the opportunities afforded to other students.

My Project

No friends, no socializing, no family visits, or birthday parties. This pandemic has not only taken a toll on the health of many around the world, it has affected the mental state of so many people as well. I have never experienced such an event in my adult years. As a result of this unfortunate historical event, I am fearful of the emotional state of our students.

I would like to not only provide substantial resources to teach my students, I would to implement a SEL curriculum to address and support their emotional needs.

This includes books for read alouds, activities for morning meeting and reflection time, and digital resources that will help my students balance their emotions. Educating these students and supporting their gentle emotional needs especially during this time is paramount. With everything that is going on, we can not forget the children.
