My Students

"Good morning class! Happy (day of the week)! We have a lot to learn and a lot to do." These are my usual first words to my students once we arrive in front of our classroom. It is important my students understand that education is vital and that is the number one reason they attend school.

I've often observed people cringe up their face or respond in a way that lets me know they think my job is more difficult than that of other teachers because of where I teach, or that my job is less enjoyable.

Actually, I have the privilege of teaching the best group of 3rd graders out there. They are extra special to me because I have had this group since 1st grade. They are eager to learn, respectful, very talkative, humorous, and at times have a little more energy than I would like, but all in all I wouldn't trade them for any other group of students. We belong to a school in Brownsville, Brooklyn. This neighborhood has been deemed one of the worst areas in Brooklyn. It possesses all of the qualities that come with poverty: high crime rate, gang violence, failing schools, limited services, etc. My school is specifically looking at each individual child and trying to find an approach that works best for them. It's not an easy task, but we are committed.

My Project

I have ordered various books, thinking individually about each student and their interest. Reading is a big part of our curriculum and students are expected to read for about 35 minutes daily, but my classroom has limited books. As a teacher, I have learned that the best readers are students that read daily and have developed a love for books. A lot of my students have limited books at home, so it is crucial that my class is equipped with enough books that will keep kids engaged while developing that great love. The eager faces I once saw when it was time for reading has diminished. They are not as excited because they have read the same books multiple times. I am saddened by that look and I'm eager to once again see the joy that reading had brought them. Reading is adventurous, the words have the power to take kids on unimaginable adventures. During reading, you can see multiple students stretched out on the carpet, some at their desks, or others in a corner. Reading is fundamental!

If my project is funded, my kids will once again be taken on unimaginable adventures through the power of words and books.

If kids learn to develop a love for reading, the opportunities are countless. Being that my students through no fault of their own were born into poverty, they are in the midst of all the factors that come with poverty. That cycle is hard to break; however, I am a firm believer that education and knowledge is one of the most important factors in breaking that cycle.
