My Students

Because I teach at an all-girls school, the focus on math and science is extra important within my classroom. While students have both whole-group and small-group math instruction, it's important for them to see math in practical life, and we need books with strong math concepts.

My students are four-year-old girls living in the most under-served area of Washington, D.C.

Our all-girls school is 98% African-American and over 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. My girls are bright, curious, sweet and full of excitement for learning. At home, they may not have access to any books, much less those that support math learning. When they are read to, or when they look at books themselves, they are enthralled and love to ask more. Providing math books for them will allow them to increase their love of literature as well as understand math in more abstract ways.

My Project

I've chosen quality books that cover many math skills including shapes, colors, one-to-one correspondence and concepts of money. They are engaging books with wonderful characters and enriching visuals that will be read right before an interactive math meeting that occurs daily. Students will also be able to look at these books in the library on their own in order to explore them independently.

My four-year-old students are starting strong to become interested in math, and using books is such an important way for them to grow that love of math.

Because girls nationwide fall behind on math scores, I want to inspire them now to love math and think about it outside of the classroom setting.
