Counting Collection Library

Help me give my students the opportunity to experience math hands on. By manipulating concrete objects like coins, dominoes, beads, bills, etc., students develop a greater number sense which in turn helps develop their problem solving skills.

My Project

I am teaching a 4th/5th combo class in a priority school and through the use of Cognitively Guided Instruction, I hope to give all my students access to the math standards and practices they need to succeed academically, while fostering a love for math. I strive for my students to develop strong foundational math skills through the use of collaborative hands-on learning in order to strengthen and solidify their problem solving skills. Collaborative hands-on activities, such as Counting Collections, help students develop number sense which aids in the transition from concrete to abstract concepts.

Counting Collections are an engaging and effective way to help students develop essential math skills.

Students are challenged to organize their collection, count the total items in their collection, find the value of their collection, represent their counting strategy, and explain their solution path. In doing so, they practice skip counting, grouping, organizing, collaborating, and explaining their reasoning, which are all fundamental concepts in mathematics. This hands-on approach allows them to visualize and understand numbers in a concrete way, making abstract concepts more accessible and enjoyable.

My goal is to create an accessible, engaging, and effective math environment that builds students' math identity. Your contribution to our project will provide the tools and resources needed to implement Counting Collections in our classroom in order to meet all my students where they are in their mathematic trajectory. In advance, I thank you for your contribution in strengthening my students' math foundational skills needed for their future academic success.

Thank you for donating to our project!
