My Students

My class is anything but typical, I teach resource for special needs students and at any one time I can have kids in 3 or 4 different grades in my room. I also may have a couple of older students who are "interning" with me and a visiting student teacher.

I teach a "cross-categorical" resource class, which means my kids could be identified as developmentally disabled, mildly cognitively handicapped, moderately cognitively handicapped, behaviorally handicapped or functioning on the Autism spectrum, to list a few of the categories I serve.

We are a K-8 school, and I serve the K-5 students My "interns" are middle grade students who have expresses an interest in going into education and are doing well enough to not need to participate in remediation classes in the afternoons. Our school is small, less than a 1,000 students, and we are in rural southeastern North Carolina. Our local economy depends on agriculture, primarily hogs and turkeys. We have no large cities or towns, with the closest town of any size being 45 minutes away.

My Project

What I really need and the school just doesn't have the funds for are some head phones so when I put some kids on the computers they can each work on programs that are individual to their needs and level of understanding, and the rest of the class can work without hearing those disturbances. I also need some counting cubes, the kids adore using them to play with and to use as counters as they are doing their math. The beginning learners like them to count with, and the different colors help in "seeing" the numbers. The older kids like to connect and disconnect and them and make things out of them. We have used so many of ours to the point of being faded and broken. I don't mind the faded, but some of my kids bet very upset if the reds don't all match, or the blues are not all the same, it's part of their disability.

So will some head phones and cubes make a noticeable difference in the world?

Probably not, but they will make a difference to some kids who face difficulty in getting through the world, and may help them to learn to master the portion of the world they will inhabit. These are not big items, but little things that will help the kids learn and grow, and that is what this is all about. Thank you for your consideration of visiting this website and taking the time to read this. I
