This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a post-covid world, school counseling has become very intense. Anecdotally the increase in mental health issues affecting our high school students is extremely overwhelming. When students have a place they can go to regroup, reset their nervous systems, express themselves through drawing or writing and working on their goals, it helps them to build their capacity to deal with the stressors they encounter throughout the day. I have students who stop by daily, just to squeeze a stress ball. I would love to be able to give some out strategically. Many of my students are the first in their families to finish high school and continue on to college. There can be a lot of pressure for them to "do better" than their parents. Anxiety, depression and low self esteem are often barriers to student's success. When they have a place to go and work on their personal goals, decrease anxiety and build self esteem, we are helping them build coping strategies that will benefit them throughout high school and beyond.
