Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have cleared out an office area to allow the counselors to provide group counseling to our students during schools hours. The space is barren and we hope to create a calming/safe space conducive to counseling, therefore I am seeking donations. We need a couch, some pillows/plush animals, some throw blankets, rugs, curtains, lighting, decor etc. to create a space that will allow the students to forget the stress and pressures of the school day to focus on healing from some of the traumas of their life experiences.

We have identified about 7 students in who are suffering the recent loss of a parent/caregiver.

They are beginning to show signs of depression, anger, self-harm and extreme anxiety. Our counselors are currently forming a Grief Counseling group to bring these children together to show then that they are not alone, that they have others that they can go to who will understand what they are feeling. Our counselors will guide them through in handling grief and learning how to move forward equipped with new coping skills and strategies to continue to heal and grow.

Additionally we have several students who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and others who have Autism and other struggles with sensory over stimulation. This calming therapeutic setting will be an ideal place for them to go to in order to reset themselves in a quicker time, to return to class.

The room will be accessible by the counseling staff, so that we can monitor who is in the room and ensure the furniture and equipment are cared for and not mis-used for other purposes. We are not attempting to replace other therapeutic treatments, but we want to enhance and reinforce them and help students to know that they have a safe space at school.
