This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve a student population with a high need, especially around social emotional support. Unfortunately, they do not get the minimum support required at home to give them a foundation of social emotional skills. The opportunity and achievement gaps are very apparent among our student population. It's very difficult to teach students all the basic fundamental skills needed to achieve success at every phase of their lives, such as, social skills, conflict resolution, problem solving, teamwork, and goal setting.

My school is in a low poverty neighborhood and our student population is comprised of almost 100% minority students.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the school counseling department of one is stretched very thin when it comes to being able to provide resources and engaging materials for students.

My Project

I am requesting materials to provide my students with visual representations of college and career goals, as well as expanding their world view. The materials I am requesting are college pennants, career aspiration posters, and flags of different countries. As students walk the halls, they will be reminded that there is a bigger world outside of the school walls for them to explore, however it all starts within our building by focusing on education and creating goals. College pennants will allow students to aspire to learn about different colleges. The career posters will expose students to the different types of career paths and occupations, and not limit them just to what they see at home or on television. Having the flags of different countries decorate our hallways will encourage students to have the mindset that with an education and career, they can explore the world! It will also expose students to the world of different cultures and allow them to dream of traveling to a different country one day in hopes that they will achieve that dream through education.

The donations to this project of college pennants, career posters, and flags of different countries will allow my students to see visual reminders daily as they walk through the halls on every floor that there is a bigger goal than just graduating elementary or high school.

There is more to prepare for and it begins with visual reminders everyday about their dreams and goals and where they can take themselves!

These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by giving them something to look at and think to themselves that anything is possible, which will motivate them to do better in and out of the classroom.
