My Students

"The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” -Sylvia Plath I love my students. They have so much to offer the world, but they do not always see how incredible they are. I want to teach them how to approach their work without self doubt. I want them to understand that their voice matters.

My 10th, 11th, and 12th grade ELA students are brilliant, funny, enthusiastic, and kind.

They are diverse; the demographics of the high school is 23% Hispanic, 29% Asian (Approximately 85% of the Asian population in Cambodian), 6% African and African American, and 41% White. 15% of all students are special needs, 65% are on free or reduced lunch, and 30% are English language learners (2008.) Many of these students struggle with great adversities, yet their perseverance never fails to impress me.

My Project

The bulletin boards will be used to showcase student work, with an emphasis on critical thinking, writing, and creative projects. Students will be able to read and respond to their classmates' work and feel confident with their own. The bulletin boards will be used in gallery walks and silent conversations, so students may share ideas without fear of being "wrong" or ridiculed. They will see that they have a voice and that it matters.

Year after year I see my students struggle with the blank page.

It's not that they don't have anything to say, they think what they have to say isn't good enough. If my students had a place to share their work, they will realize how important their voice is. Students will also benefit from reading stories and opinions that are different from their own, and they will be challenged to think critically.
