The students at the all-girls school in Philadelphia will greatly benefit from reading a novel about slavery, survival, and friendship. Slavery is a central unit of study in the required African American History class that is offered to high school freshmen. This novel will allow the students to learn about the conditions of slavery and indentured servitude in addition to honing their academic literacy skills. This novel will also provide a medium to help the students develop their social skills because relationships in light of diversity (race and culture) are important issues in the novel. "Copper Sun" is an assessable novel that is filled with content about slavery including life in Africa, the holding pens on the coast, the Middle Passage, slave auctions, the violence and brutality, slave labor, slave communities, and the varied and complex relationships between masters and slaves. One of the most beautiful aspects that the author captures in this novel is the development of a relationship between two sixteen-year-old females. The two protagonists experience the cruelties of slavery and ultimately develop a deep and loving bond. This novel is about freedom, friendship, acceptance, and perseverance, which are all concepts that female students can appreciate.
