My Students

Just imagine after reading through books, magazines, and encyclopedias to find pertinent information for a class project and then being told "come back another day to finish up". This is what happens to our students when they visit the school library and need to make copies of their findings.

We are a Title 1 public school that serves students from Pre-kindergarten through eight grade.

The average parental income in this area is in the lowest economic range. Two years ago, we opened a school library media center that services all students and the school community. Our upper grade students enjoy visiting the library during their lunch period and other open access periods to type, read, and most importantly conduct ELA, science, and social studies projects.

My Project

We are a newly opened school library media center that is committed to providing 21st century resources to all of our students. Our goal is to not only put books in the hands of all our students but provide access to current information. Most of our students come to the school library first when conducting their research projects. Often times they find the information needed through print materials. For example, articles from World Book Encyclopedia. Because we lack a copy machine in the library students often cannot take home copied documents to complete assignments in a timely manner. Given students access to a copy machine, as the public library provide, students will have full opportunities to begin their projects in the school library and continue at home or in their classroom. Unfortunately, the library allocation does not provide enough to purchase a copy machine therefore, we must seek donation to provide this necessary resource for our students to succeed academically.

This project is so important because it will make a difference in how effective students are able to seek and use information in the library and extend that "copied" or print document at home and in the classroom.

Our goal is to provide our students with full access to information via various media. Having a copy machine in the library will help us reach that goal.
