My students need tables to encourage understanding about each other as well as postcards and a globe to write to other second graders to learn about other cultures outside of our classroom.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school serves students in poverty. As a Title I school, we are used to going without. Yet our students still have the same needs as others, if not greater needs. My students come from families that cannot provide any of the supplies needed for our school, so we often make due with what we have. This means that we are unable to purchase the things that would better assist my students who have severe learning needs. Despite this, we have passionate learners and teachers that are dedicated to providing the best education possible to our students.
My Project
As a teacher, I have noticed that my students often have little understanding about others lives. They have a hard time understanding others hardships and their challenges. They often have a hard time interacting with their peers and don't know anything about the world outside of their communities.
Desks signify solitude: Tables signify unity.
I want my students to be able to come to the table and work with each other instead of being isolated at a desk. This will help students learn about each other and learn how to work together. Only with constant interaction with each other, building social skills, and solving problems together will my classroom grow more tolerant of their classmates.
My students also need to learn about cultures other than their own. I have found a network of second grade teachers across the globe that are willing to exchange postcards with each other. We will write about our community and how we live, then send it to other communities across the country and the globe! Then when we get postcards back we can learn about those countries and put the postcard on a bulletin board to show everyone in our school!
