My Project

Have you ever tried to learn how to write a narrative essay with sweat pouring down your face? Or maybe you have practiced multiplication facts in a room that was too hot to think in? When it's too hot for comfort, my third graders' learning and self-regulation skills go out the window. Help us cool down so we can learn, play, and grow together.

Cool kids need a cool classroom!

When you have 25-30 bodies in a small space with large windows and no AC, it is difficult to focus, difficult to think, and difficult to learn. Weather scientists are predicting the continued rise in temperatures in the Pacific Northwest, especially in the fall and spring. We are definitely feeling the heat in our classroom, and the environment in the room is not conducive to learning. The fans placed throughout the room blow the hot air around, but we need a better solution.

This project will fund the purchase of an evaporative air cooler, commonly referred to as a "swamp cooler." Because of the type of windows in our classroom, a traditional portable air conditioner is not an option, but an evaporative air cooler is ventless and can reportedly lower the ambient temperature by several degrees! As their teacher, my job is to provide my students with an environment that supports their ability to learn. Right now, our classroom is simply too hot to function.
