My Project

I currently am a Behavior Support teacher for students grades six through 8 with emotional disturbances, autism, spectrum disorders, and other social and emotional disturbances. The isolation of COVID-19 was very detrimental to my students as they were not able to practice and learn the social-emotional skills that they need to thrive in school and life. When school resumed, these students were lacking SEL skills resulting in students that become overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed very easily in my classroom. My goal is to achieve a quiet corner where students can take brain breaks from stimuli in classrooms. Additionally, many of my students come to school hungry, lacking affordable food options. To alleviate this I have asked for a number of snack items to provide food for students so they can focus on learning instead of hungry bellies. Over 75% of my students are in the foster care system, 50% have been in residential treatment, and a third are incarcerated. My hope is to have a variety of board games, LEGO blocks, and motor skill activities to facilitate working together and healthy coping skills.
