My Students

I am a second grade special education teacher teaching in a low-income neighborhood. My students are composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help care for their children while they work long hours to make ends meet.

Moreover, my students have special needs, compounded with this pandemic, it leads to a more difficult and frustrating situation when the students come back to school.

My Project

The center of our learning takes place in our classroom. However, due to COVID, we will need to split our class into two groups. We need 4 tower fans and extension cords for the room across the hall as the current air conditioner is not functioning well.

My second graders are constantly asking, "Why is it so hot?” and they become listless.

How can I expect them to focus when they don’t feel comfortable? Furthermore, they already have challenges such as learning behavior, emotional, speech, and sensory issues combined with the gaps in learning due to remote learning for over a year. The school days are long and it’s difficult to focus without a cool and comfortable learning environment. These tower fans will help maintain their focus and energy levels during those long stretches of days.
