Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in this class are a part of the DOE's District 75, which is our special education district. Students in this district are overcoming odds, many of which are coming from low socioeconomic areas and attend a Title I school.

For many students, the classroom environment can be very overwhelming and it is very helpful for students to have a comfortable homey area to either calm down from the stimuli they are experiencing, take a break during the day, or read in a comfortable area.

Having this area available can greatly affect a student’s ability to comfortably learn and function throughout the school day. Many of my students learn best in an environment that accounts for and mitigates the opportunity for sensory overload. As their teacher, it is my goal to create the most comfortable classroom environment for all of my students that fosters successful learning and development.

My Project

Bean bag chairs will give students a comfortable and homey place to relax and take breaks throughout the day. Sitting at the desks all day long can be difficult for some students and many benefit from having different areas to go throughout the day with flexible seating options. This is also beneficial to students that need space to sit separate from their peers and take a moment to calm down before rejoining the class. In addition, these bean bags will be used as a reading corner so students have a comfortable place to sit and work on their reading skills.
