I teach third grade at a diverse, Title I school in southwest Florida. Our students come from numerous cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are an "A" school and one of 27 schools chosen by The Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (ECTAC) for "Exceeding Expectations." Through lots of hard work, our school continues to help our students succeed.
I encourage lots of independent reading time in my classroom, and I expect my students to read from a range of genres.
I try to keep our classroom library organized by genre so that my students can easily find the books, authors, and series that they love. They love to read and get excited when we get new books!
My Project
For this projects, I am trying to expand the selection of comic-style books (like Brad Meltzer's "Ordinary People Change the World" biography series) and graphic novels (like Dav Pilkey's DogMan Series - which I currently cannot keep on the shelves in my classroom, so I need more copies!) to encourage and engage my reluctant readers!
When reading comics or graphic novels, children slow down and look at the images and text to fully ingest what's happening in the plot.
Graphic novels are great for kids with learning disabilities. When kids have lower self-esteem because they aren't strong readers, that can discourage them from wanting to read. But graphic novels are a great way to promote literacy because kids don't feel as "embarrassed" as they might if they were given a "baby" book with lots of pictures.
Thanks for supporting my project to bring more comic-style books and graphic novels into my classroom!
