My students need three convection ovens, a digital scale, timers, measuring tools and wipe off pockets to learn real world scenarios involving cooking.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Barton's classroom raised $594

My Students
Our school is high poverty with the majority of students receiving free and reduced lunch. Students need access to hands-on activities that will open their creativity. Students need to realize that math can be fun and can be found in our everyday lives.
My students are predominantly African American.
They live in a small town in Arkansas. Many of my students are living in single parent or grandparents homes and do not have some of the opportunities that other kids their age have. My school is trying to reach at-risk students and prepare them to be successful in and after college.
My Project
My students will learn to adjust recipes to the number of people that they are cooking for. They will learn to make accurate measurements and to cook different recipes. With the convection ovens, my students will be actually creating meals, not just reading about them. My students will use the timers to ensure that they do not over or under cook their recipes. They will use the measuring cups and spoons to learn how to convert between fractions while in the kitchen. They will learn conversions between fractions by using the plastic sleeves to change recipes using a dry erase marker. My students will use the digital scale to make accurate measurements while increasing and decreasing recipes to create their meals.
By allowing students to create food in the classroom and share their creations, we are building the self-esteem and pride in students who have in some cases none left.
The ability to cook is an important life skill that my students will need as they grow older.
