My Students

My students are a part of the NYSAA (New York State Alternate Assessment) program known as ACES.

These amazing students are a low function population amongst the larger special education population, within a Title I school.

Many of my students, though in High School, cannot read beyond a first grade level. As a Social Studies and Reading teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. It is a challenge to keep them interested in a topic for long periods of time, so many of our topics are extended over many weeks. They are a part of a work study program as well. They gain both life skills and academics in one place. My students have a passion for learning. Most of their time in the classroom involves hands on learning which they love. This way of learning helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program. Watching them thrive for upwards of 8 years can be an amazing and challenging task.

My Project

The students I teach have a love of cooking. This wonderful group of students are a part of an on-site work study program where they learn to love to cook and the skills they need to do make it happen. We are currently using our desks to prepare our meals that we sell to school staff. Surprising them with actual prep tables would make my students feel as if they were in a real deli, making the food they love to create. Many of my students have never had the chance to cook at home, so this program not only gives them life skills they will need for independent living, but also allows them to spread their culinary taste buds. Please help make this surprise for my students happen!
