Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a low-income school. However, just because the majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch doesn't mean that determines or alters the way I teach. I teach to the top. I keep it fun and engaging. Sometimes that's hard when you're teaching math all day long and many of the students are below grade-level. But, each day we give it our best.

You have to try.

Is it okay to make mistakes? Yes. Is it okay to have fun? Yes. Math can be fun. I try to show my students that each day.

My Project

I want to incorporate more STEM into my classroom by (adding a little more coding options to the ones I currently have so I'd like to add the new music Osmo Jam coding). I currently have some Osmo Genius kits and only two coding kits, but in a class of more than 30 students, and 6 classes each day, those are not enough, so I am looking to add more.

It is also a goal of mine to add a cooking club component at my school which will add not only math and science, but also literacy, technology, and art as well.

We can focus on the measurements and mixtures of how recipes work and come together as well as the health aspects while having fun! I am hoping that we can use the pots and fondue pots to help us melt food items over hot plates we already have. We will use the mixing bowls and measuring cups to help us mix dry items and even items that don;t need heating. I've requested 3-4 of each of these items so that students can work in team/groups and we can create a cooking competition some weeks. Students will also be required to create a recipe card for each item we make so that they can be compiled into a cookbook, digitally. We will use the books selected to help briefly teach about the type of cuisine we will make during that lesson. We will work to make cooking videos and have our own version of "Chopped Junior" by the year's end.
