My Students

Who loves food? My nine students with significant disabilities! We need the essentials to learn through cooking.

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

A microwave and a mini-refrigerator may seem like odd classroom necessities, but our classroom needs them! My students LOVE food, but often are very resistant to academic work. What better way to target language, direction following, applied math, and life skills but through cooking? With these materials, we can make snacks and small meals such as Jell-O, popcorn, pudding, waffles, and scrambled eggs. A refrigerator will help us to organize our materials and ensure that we always have the right ingredients on hand. A microwave will not only help us to warm and cook our food, but will help with number identification, elapsed time, turn-taking, cause and effect, and recipe reading.

Cooking is an essential life skill that many children learn through observation.

Children with more severe disabilities struggle to learn these basic life skills through observation. Please help my students apply their knowledge and be motivated to learn through the culinary arts!
