My Students

Many of us vividly remember the pride we felt when we first tasted a morsel of the food we helped prepare and create. We also remember getting our faces messy as we eagerly licked the spoon after a treat was popped into the oven. Cooking helps build confidence and math skills in young chefs.

Students at my school come from high poverty backgrounds, with over 63% receiving free and reduced breakfast and lunch at school.

Many of the students only have the food to eat that is provided at school, either because of lack of resources or lack of culinary knowledge. Our school works hard to provide opportunities for all of our students to achieve to their highest potential and feel successful. When we first mentioned the idea of a cooking club at the school, the smiles on the faces of the students was blinding and their excitement was nothing short of contagious.

My Project

The materials I have requested will help us start our cooking club in the middle school. I am able to provide the food, space, time, and experience to guide them through the culinary world, but now we need your help getting the materials needed to make those cooking and baking dreams a reality. Students will use cooking and baking to open up the world of math that lives around them and learn to appreciate how often math is used in our daily lives. Students will learn precise measurement, practice fractions and multiplication, as well as cultivate their patience and teamwork to produce a yummy product. As part of this cooking club, we also want to teach students the importance of proper nutrition and show them how easy it is to make a home-cooked meal - and how much better it tastes!

Your donations will bring our cooking club dreams to a group of students who would love to feel the pride that comes with tasting their very own creations, and learning how fun it is to cook.

Cooking is a task that uses so many pieces of what is taught at school and is a fantastic creative outlet for many students. For many students, this may be the first time that students have experienced all the joys of cooking. Thank you in advance for your generous support of our project!
