You are making a difference for students with special needs! I teach students ages 14-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. Our class is located on a general education campus in a low income area in California.

Students with special needs are isolated on our campus. They have little opportunity to interact with their general education peers. General education teachers are resistant when asked to collaborate because they feel they do not have the resources to to create a positive learning environment in which both special and general education students can be successful. After conducting student interest inventories and observations in both special and general education classrooms I decided to create a life skills based project in the area of cooking.

In partnership with a general education teacher at my school, I have developed a Home Economics Cooking course designed to integrate special and general education peers entitled: "Cooking Together". In heterogeneous groups students will use cooking equipment such as hand and standing mixers as they cook simple easy to make meals. Students with special needs will enhance their cooking skills which will allow them an increased chance for greater independence in the future.

Your contribution will help create experiences that will enable special education students to feel a greater sense of belonging to the larger school community. In addition, it will provide general education students with a unique learning opportunity that will enable them to form relationships that will fill them with gratitude and appreciation for the unique and special qualities that can be found in each and every person.
