My Students

I teach in a specialized school that exclusively serves students with special needs, mainly emotional disturbance. We are a Title I school, with the majority of households falling into the low economic category.

With this unique population, students find it difficult to regulate their emotions, which hinders their chances and opportunities for learning to occur.

It is important to find and capitalize upon any opportunities to immerse and engage them. Hands-on projects and technology would be perfect ways to captivate and spark their interests, while also helping them regulate their emotions in a safe way.

My Project

My students love hands-on activities, especially when they connect to their everyday lives. With a blender, frying and sauce pan, we will be able to cook a wide range of foods. They will be able to learn all about safety, following sequential steps, reading recipes, and various other skills that can be used in a vocational setting. My goal is for my students to learn how to cook in a safe way, and to become as independent as possible.

These students will be able to develop their vocational skills that allow them to transition and succeed in the work place and be as independent as possible.
