My Students

We are a kindergarten classroom of 17 students in Alaska. My students attend a diverse school of about 290 students. Our staff strives to foster positive relationships and do regular family events to help build a strong sense of community. The environment we create helps students feel safe, welcome, and loved. It is a Title I school, with many students coming from low-income families. Every student can receive free breakfast and lunch.

I want my students to have the same opportunities and learning experiences as other children in an engaging, hands-on environment.

My kindergarteners are thinkers. They come to school every day seeking a connection and wanting to learn. My students are special because they have a strong desire to do their best every day, even if they come from challenging circumstances.

My Project

Every day in my kindergarten classroom, I make sure my students have time to play. Year after year, my students are drawn to the dramatic play center. They love to play house and set up a grocery store. It is a dynamic way to get a larger group of students interacting with another. I love to see the students create roles for one another and work together.

Open-ended play is a crucial opportunity for my students to boost their social-emotional skills and foster their sense of creativity.

I am asking for several kitchen and house play items, inclduing a cash register with play money. The pretend coffee maker, blender and mixer have safe, rounded parts—and even operate with batteries! Finally, I am also asking for several shopping baskets so my students can place the plastic food we already have in our classroom in the baskets when they set up a store. These toys will be an engaging part of our classroom for years to come. Thank you for supporting these young learners!
