My Project

The students have been enjoying learning about sustainable living through our hydroponic lab this year. My students have been making connections regarding how the weather and temperature affect how our produce will grow. We have grown wonderful tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, basil, peppers, cilantro, borage, and lavender.

We've taken our learning one step further and have made Swiss Chard smoothies and salads using our produce from the hydroponic lab.

My students were so excited that they were able to take the items from the lab and transform the produce into delicious food. Even some of my picky students who don't eat anything, enjoyed eating the Swiss Chard smoothie. The students are tapping into their culinary creativity and I would love to foster their creativity by setting up a space in the room where we can have our hydroponic kitchen area. My ultimate goal for the hydroponic lab is to foster a farm-to-table experience for my amazing students.

To create a farm-to-table experience, I am requesting a refrigerator with a freezer to store items such as pickling our cucumbers and yogurt to create smoothies. I am also requesting a blender and hot plate so the students can make items such as pesto, smoothies, soups, jams, and other purees with the produce from the hydroponic lab.

By teaching my students healthy eating habits now, at a young age, this is something that will become a part of their lifelong learning. My students are learning that just because it's green or healthy for you, doesn't mean it's going to taste bad. My students are very excited about learning what they can make with the produce from the classroom and are even more excited to eat it.
