My Students

Nestled near the heart of the Cherokee Nation, our small rural school serves approximately 190 students from preschool through twelfth grade. Of those 190, ninety-six percent are of Native American descent.

Most of our students come from low-income areas due to there being limited opportunities for employment in the surrounding areas.

Our students work very hard and are excited to learn and grow. Some students have family members who are currently incarcerated and other students are being raised by someone other than their father or mother due to personal life choices.

As an educator, I believe education is an important way to not only introduce students to new experiences but to provide them with the opportunity to learn the skills they need in order to succeed in life and to break the cycle. I find it is important that each of our students receive every opportunity that students at larger, better-funded schools do.

My Project

The donation of the items provided in our shopping cart would enable the students involved in our technology classes and our film/cooking clubs the opportunity to create an implement a project geared towards learning about the culinary arts. Our students will use these materials to design and set up their own cooking space. Students have expressed the desire to create a YouTube channel featuring content focusing on utilizing these materials to prepare recipes and showcase the preparation of certain dishes to our viewers, which will be their peers and members of our community.

Help us provide our students with the materials that will allow them the chance to harness their creativity while developing skills that will benefit them beyond high school.

They will learns skills that will prepare them for post-secondary learning and ready them for employment as they are being exposed to the culinary arts and technology classes that are found in vocational programs across Oklahoma.

Our students, due to the size of the school and its location, are not afforded the same opportunities that students at larger schools are due to the lack of funding. It is my belief that our students should have the chance to experience every opportunity that those at schools with access to better funding do. With this donation, our students would be able to say that they created this idea alongside their peers and built it from the ground up.

With their broadcast and the creation of their YouTube channel, they hope to reach more people at a local scale and continue to foster that sense of community amongst our area. They want to change the culture of their school and their community.
