Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I conduct home visits for my students. In doing this, I establish a personal connection with each child. I witness their home life and interactions among their family. I see that they come from families that are riddled with inter-generational economic challenges, language barriers, and a variety of immigrant stresses and legal issues. Collectively, my students are the embodiment of the kind of human goodness that is born from long-standing family struggles that are managed with sincerity and optimism.
Their families understand and prioritize the value of their children's education.
My students are responsible beyond their years. They look for ways to be of service and are respectful of the school environment and its authorities. Generally, they arrive at school punctually, ready to learn, to the point that ninety-five percent of my class received "Perfect Attendance" for the entirety of the 2016-17 school year!
After a unit study of American historical figures, a student of Mexican descent told everyone during morning circle that he wants to be Martin Luther King Jr. when he grew up. His sentiments were echoed by his peers. My scholars need your support to thrive as they grow into model citizens.
My Project
Most of my students come to school needing the food that is provided in the cafeteria but are unaware of food sources, eco processes, or how they can make healthy and delicious foods for themselves.
Students will use these small appliances and tools to chop and cook fruits and vegetables from our own school garden to receive a needed source of nourishment.
These materials will make a world of a difference for us, making our classroom a prepared environment where self care is a priority and there is always something yummy to eat. In addition to getting a variety of nutrients, the processes involved in the making of a pizza, soup, porridge, etc. are the concrete and real ways in which students try new foods, build vocabulary, develop a sense of orderliness, sequence, coordination, collaboration, concentration and independence.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
