My 7th grade students are eagerly learning all about cooking. When I was granted permission to teach cooking as an elective at our school, I was surprised to learn how many students did not have any knowledge or experience with cooking. Less than half of my students experience cooking at home or with other relatives. I am trying to change that one year at a time! Our cooking class also plants, grows, and harvests our school garden. Each year our 7th grade students takes cooking class as one of their electives, so this project will enhance our current cooking class as well as all future cooking classes.
This is my 5th year of teaching cooking in an art classroom.
Needless to say, we do not have a kitchenette, standard oven, or even standard storage for our kitchen supplies. We do have a sink for washing and a refrigerator for cold storage. We also have a small countertop oven/toaster, a large microwave, and small appliances such as electric frying pans, blenders, and a hot plate. Here lies our need. We need a better set-up for storing our equipment. We are currently using a hand-me-down old shelving system that was originally used in the kindergarten classroom for book box and toy storage. It is short and double-sided, so we have to pull it away from the wall to access some of our equipment. It is just not functional for our needs. The Buffet Server with Hutch will not only look like an actual kitchen space, but will also provide my students with the organization and storage we need.
More than half of students from low‑income households
