My Students

"This is my invariable advice to people: learn how to cook - try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all, have fun!" -Julia Child. Doesn't that just say it all? I want to help my students learn to cook and develop a passion for food from around the world!

I teach a fourth and fifth-grade multi-age classroom, at an urban school district, in Washington.

Many students at our school, come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and need all of the resources they can get at school! I will be teaching math and social studies to two groups of thirty 4th and 5th graders. To make learning hands-on and fun, I want to incorporate cooking into my classroom. I believe food brings people together and what better way than to teach students to learn to cook it themselves!

My Project

In this project, I requested many essential items for cooking such as: mini fridge, microwave, induction burner cooktop, induction frying pan, griddle, measuring tools, bakeware, spatulas, and other kitchen tools to help equip my classroom to cook all types of food. To incorporate math and social studies, I want to expose students to food from all over the world, and even invite families to come in and do cooking demos!

Students for years to come will be able to learn the basics of cooking and become independent and capable miniature chefs! Cooking is an essential life skill that many people lack and I believe starting to cook and being exposed to cooking at a young age will help students become confident cooks. At the same time, students will use math skills, cooperative team-building skills, and learn about different cultures while doing so!
