Cooking in Style: Rainbow Aprons

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Most students live in low income, rental/HUD housing. They have few cooking skills and little nutrition knowledge. Many don't have the knowledge of specialized sanitation & food preparation skills. My students LOVE working in the kitchen labs. Students have a good time working together, creating meals, and sitting to eat together. These students deserve to have the equipment needed to complete lab work in a professional manner. Teaching the children proper sanitation can help not only the child, but the entire family unit. I am excited to help make a positive change in my students' lives.

My Project

I have 5 kitchen labs in my classroom for students. I require the students to wear aprons when in the labs making food products. I would like to provide the students with clean new aprons to wear. I currently have 30 aprons to share among 130+ students per grading period. I teach them that wearing aprons is not only a way to protect their clothing from stains, but it is also a sanitation procedure. I would like to keep the kitchens organized by offering a different color apron for each kitchen. I believe if the students are wearing the same color within kitchen units, they will work as a team.
