Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my new cooking club will be diverse and eager learners. Often, students from families who struggle financially will not stay after school for clubs because of transportation. These same families are also often at a disadvantage in having healthy and nutritious food at home. Often, the kids in these families have a limited exposure to a variety of fresh foods, and foods from various world cultures.

Many of my students will be looking for alternatives to Takis and Maruchan.

This is a huge generalization, but at our junior high, as in many places, lots of our students rely on typical cafeteria meals or packaged processed foods to get through the day. However, when I bring in homemade items or fresh veggies and fruit, they love it, and they are curious about asparagus & artichokes, and other foods they don't usually have.

Not all the kids in the club will come from low-income families, but everyone will have a great time and learn about making fresh food from scratch.

My Project

I am requesting groceries and supplies to start a cooking club at our junior high. Our club will emphasize the fun of cooking food, basic kitchen skills, health and nutrition, culture, and food safety.

This year, students will be able to participate in clubs during the school day, and literally half of our school requested cooking club as their top choice.

Our club will give students a chance to experience the fun of pursuing their passions and expanding their exposure to a variety of foods, and also promote a healthy and inquisitive lifestyle.

This club has no financial account through our school, so we have to get creative for funding. We are literally starting from scratch. We will need basic things like bowls, measuring cups, and utensils. We will also need a supply of paper towels and paper plates/cups. And of course, we need fresh groceries for each recipe. Many things can be donated, but groceries are a bit more challenging!

The club will meet once a week for an hour, and will serve 30 students each semester.

These donations will take the pressure off of pursuing local donations at first, but my plan is to form partnerships with our families and local businesses and establish some more sustainable funding or donated food over time. We will also work with student council to raise funds.
