Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students attend a small, autonomous, public, Title 1 high school where the student population is 93% youth of color and over 75% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. Even though a majority of the students come from adverse backgrounds, they are bright and enthusiastic learners who are eager to learn how cooking and STEM are linked.

Most of my students have limited STEM experience, but STEM can be interwoven into the cooking experience to make STEM activities less intimidating, hands-on and more fun.

The kitchen is a virtual laboratory for exploring STEM topics. With this project, my students will learn: 1) how to weigh and measure recipe ingredients; 2) observe patterns and similarities of certain foods; 3) food reaction to cooking/baking 4) learning about food systems; and 5) how to handle food waste wisely.

At present, I’m bringing in pots, pans, the electric griddle and hot plate from my home to my classroom. Thus, having this project funded would mean that my students will have these items in the classroom to setup the outdoor kitchen. Thank you for considering funding this important project.
