My Students

I teach autistic support at a Title I school in Philadelphia. My grade band is K-2 this year and I service 10 students in a self contained room. My students are hard workers and love to have fun while learning. I not only teach academics but life skills as well. I cook with them, do crafts to support fine motor skills, and teach personal and domestic maintenance skills.

I envision a fully functional kitchen (we have a sink and a refrigerator, a table, and place settings), but we need a working stove and microwave.

Cooking and kitchen safety are extremely important to all my students. Teaching them early will help garner self independence for them at home. These are important skills for them to have.

My Project

The stove and microwave will help incorporate the life skill of cooking and kitchen safety care to my students. Over the pandemic we started cooking at home and my parents were a huge help during our time apart. I would like to continue on with the cooking and kitchen safety skill set as we return to our school setting.

Our stove does not work and our microwave just gave out.

Not only will this garner independence for my students, but it will also encourage them to try different foods. The best part is that we are also going to incorporate social skills by having other autistic support classes come cook with us, especially grades 2-4. It will be amazing not only to see my group learn but other students as well.
