My Students
My students have extraordinary talents, but they have a difficult time expressing themselves. When I do cooking lessons with them, I see their personalities shine! We need some cookbooks!
I teach at a public school in New York.
This year, I have all 6th grade students, but it is a 6, 7, 8th grade special education life skills class. They are an amazing bunch of students who all have special needs, ranging from Downs Syndrome to Autism.
My Project
One key component in my life skills class is daily living skills. Cooking is a major skill that they will need to use every day to become independent. Each day, the students cook their own snack which usually consists of a frozen bagel. However, I would like to motivate my students to learn basic reading and writing skills with the fun step-by-step cooking activities that these cookbooks can provide. When my students cook, I see them shine. They enjoy the satisfaction of knowing they just created this wonderful snack or meal. I am requesting 2 cookbooks including "Cooking to Learn: Integrating Reading and Writing Activities" and "Cooking to Learn 2." These cookbooks will provide enjoyable meals but also they will help students improve sequencing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, expressive language, problem-solving, written language, and social skills. These are many goals my students have in their IEPs.
I would really appreciate any help you can give to my class.
I know that they would appreciate it too. Your donation will truly help out my class with their cooking skills, just one more step towards independence.
