In the U.S, on June 4, 2013, the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency launched the U.S. Food Waste Challenge, calling on entities across the food chain, including farms, agricultural processors, food manufacturers, grocery stores, restaurants, universities, schools, and local governments. Furthermore, decomposing food waste produces methane, a strong greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Worldwide, one-third of food produced is thrown away uneaten, causing an increased burden on the environment.
One of the goals is to use recycle food waste to to create compost, bioenergy, and natural fertilizers.
We aim to turn trash to treasure by composting at least 25% of students' leftover lunches by the end of this year and use it to fertilize our garden!
The materials requested convert food to compost, and we can compare how the electronic machines compare with the traditional bokashi system, which is not as popular. By helping students see how easy it can be to convert food to precious fertilizer, we can equip them with the knowledge to tackle more and more trash!
